We'd all love to have a perfect character with an unstoppable power. However, in the interest of keeping the game interesting and fair, we have to place limits. In this thread, I'm going to lay out some of the reasons that we might ask you to edit your character.
Overused and/or Too Many Powers
*Under no circumstances will any original character be allowed to have the exact same powers as a canon character. You must make your character's powers different from any canon character.
*Don't string together a bunch of unrelated powers.
*Don't make your character's powers too broad or vague. It may be difficult, but it is good to define limitations for your character's power. For example, if your character is telepathic, you should pick something specifically related to telepathy for your character to specialize in. A telepathic character shouldn't be able to have mind control, mind reading, thought implantation, telekinesis, and illusion-creating powers (unless you're Charles Xavier). By the way, telepathic/telekinetic character applications will be very strictly reviewed.
*If your character is very smart, then we probably won't allow him to also be super strong. Please, please, please place limitations on yourself and your characters.
*YOU ARE REQUIRED to rate your character using the Statistics/Powers point system, which will help you figure out your character's strengths and weaknesses.
Hackneyed Histories/Personalities
*Genetic experimentation is very rare. Your character should not have been the subject of genetic experimentation.
*We will also limit the number of characters who have had abusive childhoods and/or ran away from home. Think of something else.
*Mental Illness as a history is discouraged. We don't want a bunch of crazy people running around.
*Secret Government Projects (Weapon X, SHIELD, etc.) should be avoided in character histories.
*History with a canon character should be limited. That means, your character can't be Gambit's previously unmentioned former girlfriend. Magneto can't have secretly fathered your character in the middle of taking over the world. Your character is not a former nemesis of Wolverine's. Your character can be acquainted with canon characters, that's it.
*Your character should either be currently attending, as in just started, or has never attended Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.
Too Many Skills
*When choosing skills for your character, choose skills which compliment your character's power and limit yourself to no more than 5 or so. In most cases, it is unrealistic for a single person, even a mutant, to speak 8 languages fluently, be skilled in 5 different forms of martial arts, have 6 doctoral degrees in different fields, etc. If you are going to attempt to make a character with numerous skills, make it plausible and very specific.
Multiple Character Problems
*You should not make two characters who are very similar. We will not approve the second one. In general, please try to vary your characters as much as possible. If you already play a male character, try a female. If you already have a character who is evil, make one who is good. Do not make two characters who have very similar powers.
*Do not make two characters who are in a close relationship with each other. That means, don't make two characters who are romantically involved or who are brother and sister. If you would like your character to be romantically involved with another, speak to another player and have them create and play the partner.
These guidelines are not meant to be overly restrictive. The goal of having guidelines is to stimulate your creativity and to create variety. We are willing to make exceptions to these rules on a case by case basis. We reserve the right to reject and/or ask that you edit your character.
